How AI Agents Are Changing Software Development

How AI Agents Are Changing Software Development

The biggest change in software development might not be how quickly developers write code. It might be how much of the work they no longer have to do manually.

Imagine assigning a feature to an AI agent. It explores the codebase, identifies the files that need changes, writes an implementation, runs tests, and prepares a pull request for you to review.

You are still the engineer responsible for the result. But instead of performing every step yourself, you can spend more time deciding what should be built and whether the solution is correct.

This is the shift from AI that assists with coding to AI agents that can participate in the software development process.

What Are AI Agents in Software Development?

A traditional coding assistant might suggest the next few lines of code. An AI agent can take a broader instruction, break it into steps, use tools, inspect results, and continue working toward a defined outcome.

For example, you could ask an agent to add password-reset functionality to an existing application. Depending on its tools and permissions, it might inspect the authentication code, identify relevant components, implement changes, run tests, and prepare the work for review.

The important difference is that the agent can act on the results of its previous steps rather than simply returning a block of generated code.

GitHub's coding agent documentation describes workflows in which agents work on assigned issues and prepare changes that developers can review through pull requests. These workflows are already being used in real software development environments.

How AI Agents Are Changing the Development Workflow

From Writing Every Line to Defining the Right Problem

Developers have traditionally spent significant time translating requirements into code. AI agents can help with implementation, allowing engineers to concentrate more on the expected behavior, system design, and decisions that require context.

A well-defined task gives an agent a clearer target. A vague instruction such as "improve the application" leaves too much room for interpretation.

The more clearly engineers describe the intended outcome, the easier it becomes to evaluate whether the generated solution is useful.

From Manual Debugging to Faster Investigation

Debugging often involves reading unfamiliar code, tracing errors, reproducing problems, and testing possible fixes.

An AI agent can help investigate a failure, search relevant files, suggest likely causes, and run tests to evaluate a proposed solution. Engineers can then focus their attention on the findings and decide which changes are appropriate.

This does not eliminate debugging. It gives developers another way to investigate problems and explore potential solutions.

From Repetitive Testing to Continuous Verification

AI-generated code is most useful when it is paired with reliable testing.

Agents can help generate test cases, run existing test suites, identify failures, and revise implementations. When integrated into a development workflow, these steps can reduce the effort required to check routine changes.

The engineer still needs to determine whether the tests cover the important behavior. Passing tests are evidence of correctness, not proof that software has no defects.

From One Task at a Time to Parallel Work

Some engineering tasks can be divided into independent pieces. One agent might investigate a bug while another prepares documentation or develops an isolated feature.

This creates an opportunity to make progress on several tasks at once, provided the work does not conflict and the results can be integrated safely.

Parallel work is especially useful when responsibilities are clear. Assigning multiple agents the same ambiguous task can create duplicated effort rather than meaningful progress.

What Changes for Software Engineers?

AI agents make technical judgment more important, not less.

Engineers need to understand architecture, define requirements, evaluate trade-offs, review code, and recognize when an apparently reasonable implementation is wrong. They also need to understand the security and maintenance implications of accepting generated changes.

The role increasingly involves directing work and verifying outcomes alongside writing code directly.

That does not mean programming fundamentals are becoming irrelevant. Understanding data structures, APIs, databases, testing, and system design helps engineers recognize mistakes that generated code might otherwise conceal.

The opportunity is to spend less time on repetitive implementation and more time on the decisions that determine whether a product works well.

How to Start Using AI Agents Effectively

Begin with a small, well-defined task. Give the agent access only to the relevant files and tools, describe the expected behavior, and specify how success should be tested.

Ask it to explain its plan before making complicated changes. Review the resulting code, run the tests, and examine any changes to security-sensitive areas.

Once the workflow proves reliable, expand to larger tasks or parallel agents.

This approach makes it easier to identify where agents genuinely save time and where additional review is necessary.

The Bigger Opportunity

AI agents are changing software development by making it possible to delegate parts of the engineering workflow rather than simply asking for code suggestions.

The real opportunity is not to remove engineers from the process. It is to let engineers direct more of their attention toward architecture, product decisions, complex problems, and software quality.

The best engineers will not be measured only by how much code they write, but by how effectively they turn ideas into reliable software.
