Your next customer might never click a Google search result.
They might ask ChatGPT which software to use, ask Perplexity to compare competitors, or get a recommendation directly from Google's AI search experience. The AI gives them an answer, names a few brands, and links to selected sources.
If your brand is missing from that conversation, you could miss an opportunity before the customer even reaches your website.
This is where Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) comes in.
GEO is about improving your brand's chances of being discovered, represented accurately, and cited in AI-generated answers. It is becoming an important topic for marketers, founders, and businesses trying to understand how online discovery is changing.
But there is a catch: nobody can guarantee that a particular trick will make an AI recommend your brand.
So what actually works, and how do you get started?
What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Think of the last time you searched for a product. You probably compared websites, read reviews, and opened several tabs before deciding what to trust.
AI search can compress parts of that process into a single conversation.
Instead of presenting only a list of links, systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI search features can generate answers using information from relevant sources. GEO focuses on making your content and brand more likely to appear in those answers.
The concept was formally studied in a 2024 research paper by researchers affiliated with Princeton University and other institutions. Published at the ACM SIGKDD conference, the paper introduced methods for improving visibility in generative engines. Some methods increased visibility by up to 40% in the researchers' experiments. That was a benchmark result, not a promise of a 40% improvement for every website. Read the original research.
The central idea is simple: make your content genuinely useful, easy to understand, and supported by credible evidence.
Is GEO Different From SEO?
Yes, but not as much as some marketing campaigns suggest.
SEO helps people discover your pages in search results. GEO focuses on whether your brand and content appear in AI-generated answers.
Imagine someone searches for the best project management software. Traditional search may show several websites. An AI assistant might instead compare products, explain their differences, and cite a handful of sources.
Both experiences depend on relevant information, quality, and discoverability. Strong SEO foundations therefore remain valuable for GEO.

The smarter strategy is not to abandon SEO. It is to make your website useful enough to perform well across both traditional and AI-powered discovery.

How Do You Optimize Your Website for AI Search?
You do not need to rebuild your entire website. Start with these practical steps.
Understand what your audience is asking
Find the questions customers ask before choosing a product. Explore relevant Google searches, Reddit discussions, customer reviews, support tickets, and sales conversations.
For example, a founder looking for a website builder might ask, "Which AI website builder is best for beginners?" or "How much does it cost to build a website with AI?"
These questions can guide content that addresses actual problems rather than simply repeating popular keywords.
Give people a better answer
Answer the main question early. Use clear headings, short paragraphs, practical examples, and specific explanations.
If you are comparing products, explain who each product suits, what it costs, and where it differs. If you publish statistics, cite the original source and explain what the numbers actually measure.
The goal is not to write for a machine. It is to make your content useful enough that readers have a reason to trust it.
Publish something other websites cannot easily copy
Generic articles often repeat information that already exists everywhere.
Original research, first-hand experience, expert commentary, transparent comparisons, and real customer results give your website something distinctive to offer.

Make your website easy to discover
Check that important pages can be crawled and indexed, your internal links make sense, and your site works properly on mobile devices.
Use descriptive page titles, accurate headings, and appropriate structured data where relevant. Keep product details and company information consistent.
One common misconception is that adding an llms.txt file automatically improves Google AI visibility. Google's current guidance says such files are not required for its AI search features and do not improve visibility in Google Search.
Build a reputation beyond your website
People rarely trust a company based only on what it says about itself.
Relevant independent reviews, credible industry coverage, expert discussions, and genuine customer experiences can help establish your brand's reputation.
Research published by Ahrefs in December 2025 examined 75,000 brands and found correlations between AI visibility and factors such as YouTube mentions and brand mentions across the web. These are correlations, not proof that any single type of mention causes AI visibility to increase. Read the study.
Focus on earning genuine recognition rather than manufacturing mentions.

How Do You Know If Your GEO Strategy Is Working?
Start by testing the questions your potential customers actually ask AI tools.
Does your brand appear? Is the description accurate? Does the system cite your website? Which competitors appear instead?
Record the answers and repeat the tests over time. Results can vary by platform, query, location, and date, so one successful response is not enough to establish a trend.
Track referral traffic, relevant enquiries, conversions, and available search performance data alongside brand mentions. Visibility matters, but its business value matters more.
Be cautious of tools that promise guaranteed AI rankings. Third-party visibility scores can help with monitoring, but they are not official measurements of how every AI system ranks or selects sources.
Does GEO Actually Work?
Research suggests that content presentation can influence visibility in certain generative search environments. However, the field is still evolving, and results from one experiment do not automatically transfer to every AI platform.
Google's guidance reinforces a practical approach: create helpful, original content, maintain strong technical foundations, and avoid tactics that promise shortcuts.
That is less exciting than a secret formula for getting mentioned by ChatGPT. It is also a more defensible strategy.
The Real Opportunity Behind GEO
The internet is not becoming less competitive. The way people discover information is expanding.
Some users will continue clicking traditional search results. Others will discover brands through AI-generated comparisons, summaries, and recommendations. Businesses have a reason to understand both.
GEO is not about tricking AI into promoting your product. It is about making your expertise discoverable, your claims verifiable, and your brand worth mentioning.
You cannot control every answer an AI produces. You can control the quality of the information you publish and the reputation you build around it.
The brands that win in AI search will not necessarily be the ones publishing the most content. They will be the ones giving people the clearest reason to trust them.
